Make it Happen
The Labour Party is at its best when it looks outward, engages the local community, and campaigns for change – and I believe it can be the most effective grassroots campaigning organisation in the country.
By campaigning for a living wage in our own areas, we can help some of the lowest-paid workers in Britain and show how our values can transform lives.
To get started, here are five actions you can take to enact real change on the living wage in your own community.
- Get your Community on board
We need to help build a consensus up and down the country in favour of the Living Wage. Help us to get the word out in the local press and to get local businesses on board - Take the Living Wage to Labour Conference
Pass a resolution through your constituency Labour Party (CLP) in support of the Living Wage in order to make sure it’s near the top of the Party’s agenda when we get to Manchester in September - Sign up your local Labour Councillors to be Living Wage leaders
Encourage your local Labour Councillors to champion the living wage, working to convince your Labour Group to pay the Living Wage to local authority employees and helping build support for the Living Wage for employers across the community. - Promote the Living Wage to your local trade union members
Your trade union may already be working on securing a living wage in your area. Find out if they are, and if not, encourage them to get involved in the campaign. - Set up a Living Wage campaign team in your area
Bring together key figures in the community and set up a group to campaign as a team on the Living Wage. Invite along Labour Party members, Labour Councillors, trade union members, but also community groups and faith groups.
