Put the Living Wage on the Agenda at Labour Party Conference
Promote the Living Wage in your local Labour Party by passing a contemporary resolution.
You and members of your local Constituency Labour Party (CLP) can submit policy resolutions to Labour Party Conference. If enough local Parties submit them, we can ensure that the issue is high on the agenda and show that the Living Wage is a priority for the Labour Party.
Passing this resolution is also a great way of introducing local Party members in the Living Wage campaign – and of getting a local campaign going with local Party members at the heart.
Here’s what you’ll need to do to pass a Contemporary Resolution:
1. Download the Contemporary Resolution
2. Email your local Party Chair or Secretary to tell them you’d like to discuss the Living Wage Campaign and submit the resolution at the next CLP meeting
- They’ll be able to tell you when the next meeting is.
- In addition passing the CLP resolution, this is a great chance to get a Living Wage campaign team going in your area. Ask your CLP Chair or Secretary if this can be also be discussed on the meeting’s agenda.
- To find out who your CLP Secretary is, go to the Labour Party Members’ site at http://members.labour.org.uk. Log in, then check Profile / My Membership Details.
- The deadline for Contemporary Resolutions to be accepted for Conference is 17 September. It may be that your CLP will not meet before then, because some CLPs don’t meet during the August holidays. If this is the case, you can still ask the Chair or Secretary to send out a message about the campaign to local members. See below for more information.
3. Promote the Living Wage amongst local Party members.
- Ahead of the meeting, ask your Chair or Secretary to send a message about the resolution and the Living Wage campaign to all local Party members.
- Even if they cannot make the meeting, they can still support the campaign by signing the Living Wage petition. You can download a template message to send to local members here.
4. Attend the CLP meeting to pass the resolution – and get the local Party to start campaigning on the Living Wage
- In order for the CLP to pass and submit the Contemporary Resolution, it’ll need to be discussed and voted on at the next meeting. In your own words speak briefly about why you’re backing the campaign and why you think your local Labour Party should pass the resolution and get involved. Here’s a template presentation you could use.
5. Setting up a campaign team
- The meeting is also a great opportunity to start campaigning locally on the Living Wage. At the CLP meeting, suggest forming a campaign team of interested local members to take the Living Wage forward in your area.
- As a next step, arrange a campaign team meeting soon. Invite local Labour members to this meeting (including those not present at the meeting) – but also invite key figures in the community to that meeting, from our local Labour councillors to trade unionists, community and faith groups.
